Memory of Justin

By: Karen Silva

Auburn, California

I was accredited in Berkeley, California with Ed Altman in 2000, and I always enjoyed attending the teacher conferences after that. That’s when Justin used to attend conferences, before he got older and sent videos to conference where we felt his presence.

I never spent any one-on-one time with Justin, but always strongly felt his presence at conference. The deepest memory I have of Justin was a teaching moment, when he was sharing the importance of grounding when doing the “Taffies.” He really emphasized when moving to the left in Basic Pulling Taffy that the right hand pulls diagonally across the body and ends parallel to the ground, thus giving the grounding needed. (And vice versa, with the right hand when moving to the left.)

I have always used that explanation in my classes (although it’s much clearer to demonstrate it while teaching the words.) And I always have the picture in my mind of Justin’s demonstration.

I would like to take a moment to thank KG and all teachers who contribute to The Vital Force. I live in the Northern California foothills, a couple of hours from most other teachers in the Bay Area. I am always excited to receive my quarterly issue. The Vital Force really reinforces my connection to the community and gives me new insights to share with my practice group.
