TCC Supports Stressed Classrooms & Families
Adam Lacey, Banbury, Oxfordshire, UK
As T’ai Chi Chih (TCC) teachers in the U.S. in Europe and across the globe, you know the quiet power of this practice. You’ve seen how simple, mindful movement can soften tension, deepen awareness, and bring calm into busy lives.
Here in the UK, some primary schools are facing a crisis of wellbeing — and TCC could be part of the solution. Many British teachers and children are under intense strain. Educators are burning out from growing expectations, over-stretched resources, and a system heavily driven by testing and data. Many classrooms are dealing with increasing behavioural challenges, falling attention spans, and children who arrive at school dysregulated, anxious, and often overwhelmed. The pandemic still lingers in the nervous systems of children and adults alike. Add to that the pressures of family life, economic insecurity, and digital distractions, and it’s no wonder many UK parents and teachers feel at their limits.
This is where TCC can show up. During the previous 12 months in Banbury, Oxfordshire, with the support of local educators and community leaders, we have been sharing TCC to help restore balance to the school day. TCC, with its gentle, flowing movements and emphasis on inner stillness, is perfect for this environment.
Here’s what TCC was able to offer:
For children: a way to slow down, centre themselves, and manage “big feelings.” Even short sessions helped to bring some fun, improve focus, mood, and self-regulation — and seemed especially helpful for those with attention or sensory processing difficulties.
For teachers: a practical, embodied way to reduce stress and model grounded presence. With the creation of some Tai Chi Chih short five-minute session videos, it fits easily into the school day — no equipment required… simply helping children and the teachers to re-regulate and come to focus on the lesson ahead.
For families: with child-focused videos of under 10 minutes, developed for this purpose, a calming home ritual, a shared activity between the family and a gentle support for emotional connection. Parents often struggle to “meet their child where they are.” TCC can be that meeting point.
Your North American experiences, insights, and encouragement are incredibly valuable. In the UK, we are just beginning to grow the roots of TCC in schools and communities. There is real potential — but also a need for support, training, and connection to the global TCC teaching community.
If you’ve worked in school settings, run family programs, or supported stressed-out educators in your own corner of the world, your wisdom could help shape how TCC takes hold here in Britain. We are eager to learn, to share, and to co-create a culture where children, teachers, and families can breathe more easily.
Maybe you are keen to offer this where you live and would like to have a chat about how we got started with this most recent project. Let’s build the bridges — quietly, intentionally, with warmth and together.
